Ayatollahs
Ayatollahs are high-ranking religious leaders in Shia Islam, primarily in Iran. They are scholars who have studied Islamic theology extensively and are recognized for their deep knowledge of Islamic law and ethics. Ayatollahs often serve as spiritual guides, legal authorities, and political influencers within their communities. Their titles reflect their expertise, with "Ayatollah" meaning "Sign of Allah." They can issue religious rulings (fatwas) and interpret Islamic teachings, guiding both religious practice and societal issues, often shaping public policy and governance in countries like Iran.
