aviators’ decompression sickness
Aviators’ decompression sickness, also known as "the bends," occurs when rapid altitude changes cause dissolved gases—mainly nitrogen—in the blood and tissues to form bubbles. This usually happens during rapid ascent from high altitudes or unpressurized aircraft, preventing the body from safely eliminating nitrogen. The bubbles can block blood flow and damage tissues, leading to symptoms like joint pain, dizziness, or neurological issues. Preventive measures include gradual ascent, proper pressurization, and sometimes breathing pure oxygen to help nitrogen be safely eliminated from the body.
