avalanche formation
An avalanche occurs when a layer of snow on a slope becomes unstable and rapidly slides downward. Factors like heavy snowfall, wind, temperature changes, or existing weak layers within the snowpack can weaken its structure. If the weight and pressure exceed the snow's internal cohesion, a sudden failure happens, causing snow to break loose and accelerate down the slope. The avalanche can grow as it gathers more snow, creating a powerful, moving mass. Proper understanding of snowpack stability and environmental conditions helps predict and prevent avalanches.
