AV access
AV access, or arteriovenous access, is a specially created connection between an artery and a vein, typically in the arm, to enable efficient hemodialysis treatment for kidney failure. This connection increases blood flow so that waste and excess fluid can be removed more effectively during dialysis sessions. There are two main types: fistulas, which are surgically connected natural vessels, and grafts, which use synthetic tubes. Proper AV access is crucial for safe, effective dialysis and helps reduce the risk of complications like infections or blood clots.
