autophagosome
An autophagosome is a small, bubble-like structure inside cells that helps keep the cell healthy. It forms when the cell encloses damaged or unnecessary parts, like defective proteins or worn-out organelles, within a double membrane. This process, called autophagy, allows the autophagosome to fuse with lysosomes—cell components that contain enzymes—to break down and recycle these materials. Essentially, autophagosomes act as cellular clean-up crews, maintaining balance and preventing clutter that could harm cell function. They play a vital role in cell maintenance, survival, and overall health.
