Autologous stem cell transplant

An autologous stem cell transplant is a medical procedure used to treat certain cancers, like lymphoma or multiple myeloma. It involves collecting healthy stem cells from a patient’s own blood or bone marrow before high-dose chemotherapy or radiation. These treatments destroy cancer cells but also damage healthy blood-forming cells. Afterward, the previously collected stem cells are infused back into the patient’s bloodstream, where they help rebuild healthy blood and immune cells. This allows for more aggressive cancer treatment while reducing long-term damage to healthy marrow.
