Australian Plate
The Australian Plate is a large section of Earth's outer shell, called the lithosphere, that includes the continent of Australia and surrounding oceanic crust. It is a tectonic plate, meaning it moves slowly over the Earth's surface due to the underlying mantle's convection currents. This movement causes geological activity like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in regions where the plate interacts with neighboring plates. The Australian Plate is part of the Indo-Australian Plate and covers about 80 million square kilometers, making it one of the world's major tectonic plates.
