Australian PBR (Plant Breeder's Rights)
Australian Plant Breeder’s Rights (PBR) are legal protections granted to breeders of new, distinct, uniform, and stable plant varieties. They give the breeder exclusive rights to commercialize the new plant for a certain period, typically 20 years (or 25 years for some trees and vines). This encourages innovation by allowing breeders to benefit financially from their work. PBR does not grant ownership of the plant itself but prevents others from propagating or selling the protected variety without permission. It promotes the development of improved plant varieties while balancing public access and innovation incentives.
