Australian Aboriginal Languages
Australian Aboriginal languages are a diverse group of Indigenous languages spoken by Aboriginal peoples across Australia. Before European contact, there were hundreds of distinct languages, each with unique grammar, vocabulary, and cultural significance. Many of these languages are part of larger language families, while others are isolated. Although colonization and language suppression led to a decline in speakers, efforts are ongoing to revive and preserve these languages, which are vital to cultural identity, storytelling, and connection to ancestral lands. Today, some Aboriginal languages are still spoken, taught, and celebrated, highlighting their resilience and cultural importance.
