Aulos Playing Techniques
Aulos playing techniques involve various methods to produce different sounds and effects. Players manipulate finger holes to change pitch, and control breath pressure and embouchure (mouth position) to influence tone quality. Techniques include tonguing, where quick tongue movements start and stop notes, and vibrato, adding expressive pitch variation. Ornamentation such as trills and slides enhances musical expression. Circular breathing might be used for sustained notes. Dynamic control—playing louder or softer—is achieved through breath and embouchure adjustments. Mastery of these techniques allows the musician to evoke emotion and nuance, making the aulos a versatile instrument for varied musical contexts.
