AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia)
AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia) was a paramilitary group in Colombia, formed mainly to combat guerrilla movements and drug cartels. Operating from the 1990s until their disbandment in the early 2000s, they claimed to seek security for local communities through armed self-defense. However, their methods often involved violence, human rights abuses, and illegal activities. The group was considered a criminal organization by the Colombian government and international community. After a peace process, many members demobilized, but their legacy impacts Colombia’s ongoing struggle with violence and drug trafficking.
