AU-rich element

An AU-rich element (ARE) is a specific sequence of nucleotides found in certain messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules. These sequences are rich in adenine (A) and uracil (U) bases. AREs play a crucial role in controlling how quickly particular mRNAs are broken down in the cell. By influencing mRNA stability, they help regulate the production of proteins, especially those involved in immune responses and cell growth. This control ensures that cells produce proteins at appropriate levels and times, maintaining healthy function and preventing abnormal growth or inflammation.
