atrophy
Atrophy refers to the reduction in size or wasting away of an organ, tissue, or muscle in the body. It occurs when cells shrink or decrease in number due to disuse, aging, poor nutrition, injury, or certain medical conditions. For example, if a limb is immobilized in a cast for a long time, the muscles may weaken and shrink because they aren't being used. Atrophy can affect various parts of the body and may lead to decreased strength and function. Addressing underlying causes and engaging in appropriate therapy can often help restore some tissue size and strength.
