Atmosphere Composition
The Earth's atmosphere is made up of a mixture of gases that surround the planet. About 78% is nitrogen, 21% is oxygen, and small amounts of argon, carbon dioxide, neon, helium, and other gases. These gases enable life by providing breathable oxygen, trap heat to keep the planet warm, and protect us from harmful solar radiation. The atmosphere is layered, with the closest layer to Earth’s surface called the troposphere, where weather occurs. These gases are constantly in motion, forming weather patterns and influencing climate.
