Atlas (C1 vertebra)
The Atlas, or C1 vertebra, is the topmost bone in the neck that supports the skull. It has a ring-like shape and allows you to shake your head "yes." Unlike other vertebrae, it doesn't have a body but works with the second cervical vertebra (axis) to enable head rotation. The Atlas protects the brainstem and spinal cord's upper part while providing flexibility for head movements. Injuries to the Atlas can be serious, affecting neck stability and movement, which is why it plays a crucial role in neck anatomy and function.
