Atkinson cycle

The Atkinson cycle is a type of engine design that improves fuel efficiency by extending the combustion process. Unlike traditional engines, it allows the air-fuel mixture to burn more completely before the piston reaches the top of its travel. This is achieved by timing the intake and exhaust valves differently, leading to a longer power stroke relative to the intake stroke. The result is less energy wasted, which means better fuel economy and lower emissions, making it ideal for hybrid vehicles and other applications where efficiency is prioritized over maximum power.
