Athos Orthodox Monastic Republic
The Athos Orthodox Monastic Republic, often referred to simply as Mount Athos, is a unique self-governing region in Greece, dedicated to Orthodox Christian monasticism. It consists of around 20 monasteries and has been a religious center since the 9th century. Located on a peninsula in the Aegean Sea, it is home to monks who lead a life of prayer, work, and communal living. Access to Mount Athos is restricted to men only, and visitors require special permission. It is known for its spiritual heritage, beautiful landscapes, and significant contributions to Orthodox Christianity and Byzantine culture.
