Athos (Greek Orthodox Monastic Republic)

Athos, also known as the Holy Mountain, is a semi-autonomous monastic community in Greece, home to 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries. It functions as a religious republic, where monks govern themselves under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. Accessible only to men, Athos is dedicated to Ascetic monastic life, prayer, and preservation of Byzantine traditions.
