Asturian monarchy
The Asturian monarchy refers to the historical period when the Kingdom of Asturias was established in the early 8th century in what is now northern Spain. It was founded in 718 by King Pelayo, marking the beginning of Christian resistance against Moorish Muslim rule during the Reconquista. The Asturian monarchy laid the foundation for later Spanish kingdoms, gradually expanding and consolidating territories. It was characterized by a relatively decentralized political structure, with kings wielding regional authority. This period is significant for unifying resistance efforts and shaping the early medieval history of Spain.
