Assisted Outpatient Treatment

Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) is a legal process that helps individuals with serious mental illness receive ongoing treatment while living in the community. When someone is unable or unwilling to follow their treatment plan on their own, a court may require them to participate in outpatient services, such as therapy, medication management, and support. The goal is to improve their mental health, prevent hospitalization, and ensure safety—both for the individual and the public—while respecting their rights and maintaining their independence whenever possible.
