Aspar (general)
Aspar, or asparaginase, is a medication used primarily in cancer treatment, especially for leukemia. It works by breaking down the amino acid asparagine in the bloodstream. Some cancer cells rely heavily on asparagine to grow and survive, and by reducing its levels, asparaginase starves these cells, hindering their growth. It is usually administered through injections and can be used alone or with other chemotherapy drugs. While effective, it can cause side effects such as allergic reactions or blood clot issues, so patients are carefully monitored during treatment.
