Ash Ponds
Ash ponds are specially designed, lined water bodies used to store and manage excess ash generated from burning coal in power plants. When coal is burned, it produces ash, which contains heavy metals and other pollutants. The ash is mixed with water to form a slurry that is pumped into these ponds to prevent airborne dust and facilitate handling. Properly managed ash ponds prevent environmental contamination by containing pollutants, but if not maintained, they pose risks of water pollution and structural failure. They are a vital part of the waste management system for coal-fired power generation.
