ASA Physical Status Classification
The ASA Physical Status Classification is a system used by medical professionals to assess a patient's overall health before surgery. It categorizes patients based on their medical conditions, from healthy individuals (Class I) to those with severe systemic diseases that are a constant threat to life (Class IV), and even more critical states (Classes V and VI). This helps the surgical team understand the patient’s health risks and plan appropriate care. Essentially, it’s a standardized way to communicate how healthy or sick a person is prior to anesthesia and surgery.
