AS (Ankylosing Spondylitis)

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory condition mainly affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints (where the spine meets the pelvis). It causes pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, especially in the lower back and hips. Over time, the inflammation can lead to new bone growth, which may cause the vertebrae to fuse together, resulting in decreased flexibility. AS is more common in men and typically develops in young adults. Though the exact cause is unknown, genetic factors like the HLA-B27 gene play a role. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, relieving pain, and maintaining mobility through medications, exercise, and physical therapy.
