Articulatory description
Articulatory description refers to explaining how speech sounds are produced by the movement and positioning of the vocal organs, such as the tongue, lips, teeth, and palate. It details which parts of the mouth are involved and how they interact to create specific sounds. For example, a “bilabial” sound is made by bringing both lips together, like the “p” sound, while an “alveolar” sound involves the tongue touching the area just behind the upper teeth, like the “t” or “d” sounds. This description helps us understand the physical actions behind speech production.
