Arnold Chiari (anatomist)

Arnold Chiari is a condition where parts of the brain, specifically the cerebellum and brainstem, extend downward into the spinal canal due to abnormal development of the skull. Normally, these structures stay within the skull, but in Chiari malformation, their downward displacement can interfere with the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and affect nearby nerves. This condition can cause symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and balance problems. It is typically present from birth and varies in severity; some individuals are asymptomatic, while others may require medical treatment or surgery to prevent complications.
