Armenian Paganism
Armenian paganism was the ancient religious belief system of Armenia before Christianity became predominant in the early 4th century. It centered on animism, worship of natural features like mountains and rivers, and veneration of deities related to fertility, war, and the sun, such as Aramazd (earth), Anahit (fertility), and Mihr (solar god). Rituals often involved offerings, festivals, and sacred sites like high places and temples. This belief system reflected deep reverence for nature and ancestors, shaping Armenia’s cultural and spiritual identity until Christian influence gradually replaced pagan practices.
