Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC)

The Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) was a military-led ruling group in Sierra Leone that took power in 1997 through a coup d’état. Comprised of military officers, it aimed to restore order amid ongoing conflicts with rebel groups. The AFRC’s rule was marked by efforts to stabilize the country and regain control, but it also involved human rights abuses and a breakdown of civilian government. Their leadership was short-lived, ending in 1998 when they were ousted by a coordinated international and regional effort to restore the legitimate government.
