AREDS Study (Age-Related Eye Disease Study)

The AREDS (Age-Related Eye Disease Study) was a research project that investigated how certain nutrients might slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, common causes of vision loss in older adults. The study found that high doses of specific vitamins and minerals, like vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, and beta-carotene (or lutein and zeaxanthin in later formulations), could reduce the risk of advanced AMD. These findings help inform supplement recommendations for people at risk of severe vision loss, aiming to preserve eye health and function as they age.
