ARDS Definition

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a serious lung condition where the tiny air sacs in the lungs become inflamed and filled with fluid. This makes it difficult for oxygen to pass into the bloodstream, leading to low oxygen levels in the body. ARDS usually develops quickly due to severe illness or injury, such as pneumonia or trauma. Symptoms include severe shortness of breath, rapid breathing, and bluish skin. Treatment typically involves supportive care, like oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation, to help the lungs heal and ensure the body gets enough oxygen.
