Archaeological layers
Archaeological layers, also known as strata, are the different levels of soil and material that accumulate over time at a site. Each layer represents a specific period of occupation or activity, with older layers typically beneath newer ones. By studying these layers, archaeologists can piece together the history and sequence of human activity, understanding how a site developed over time. The layers often contain artifacts, fossils, or remains that help date and interpret past events. Proper excavation carefully preserves these layers, allowing researchers to build a chronological narrative of human history at the location.
