Apheresis Techniques

Apheresis is a medical procedure that separates and removes specific components of the blood. During the process, blood is drawn from the patient, passed through a machine that filters out certain elements—like plasma, platelets, or white blood cells—and then returns the remaining blood back to the body. This technique is often used in treating conditions like autoimmune diseases, saving platelets for cancer patients, or collecting blood components for donations. Apheresis is typically safe, taking about 1-3 hours, and allows for targeted therapies without the need for major surgery.
