Aotearoa (New Zealand) Independence Movement
The Aotearoa (New Zealand) Independence Movement is a collective effort to recognize and assert New Zealand’s sovereignty, cultural identity, and self-governance. Historically, New Zealand was colonized by the British in the 19th century, which led to the establishment of British rule. Over time, there has been a movement among Māori and other New Zealanders to emphasize indigenous rights, preserve Māori language and customs, and pursue greater political independence. While New Zealand remains a constitutional monarchy and part of the Commonwealth, these efforts aim to strengthen national identity, ensure equitable Treaty of Waitangi commitments, and promote sovereignty, cultural revival, and self-determination.
