Antral follicle count (AFC)
Antral follicle count (AFC) is a medical scan that measures the number of small follicles in the ovaries, which contain eggs, at a specific point in the menstrual cycle. It provides an estimate of a woman’s remaining egg supply and ovarian reserve. During the ultrasound, a technician counts these tiny follicles to assess fertility potential and help diagnose reasons for infertility. AFC varies with age and health, and a higher count generally indicates a better ovarian reserve, while a lower count may suggest diminished fertility.
