Antonian Tradition

The Antonian Tradition was a religious and philosophical movement in 16th-17th century Angola, founded by Queen Anna of Angola. It combined Christian beliefs with African spiritual practices, emphasizing the divine nature of Queen Anna herself, who claimed to be a reincarnation of Saint Anthony. The movement challenged Portuguese colonial authority and Catholicism, promoting African cultural identity and religious autonomy. It gained popularity among local populations but was eventually suppressed by Portuguese authorities. The Antonian Tradition is significant as an example of indigenous resistance and the blending of African and Christian traditions during colonial rule.
