Antonas Smetona was a Lithuanian politician and historian, best known for serving as the country's first and longest-standing president during the interwar period (1919-1920 and 1926-1940). He played a key role in Lithuania’s independence after World War I and led efforts to establish its political stability and national identity. Smetona's leadership shifted Lithuania toward authoritarian rule, especially after a 1926 coup. His presidency ended with the Soviet invasion in 1940, leading to his exile.
