Antifederalism

Antifederalism was a movement in the late 18th century opposing the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. Antifederalists preferred stronger state governments and were wary of a powerful central government that could threaten individual rights and state sovereignty. They preferred local control and protections for personal freedoms, fearing that a strong national government might become oppressive. Their concerns eventually led to the addition of the Bill of Rights, ensuring protections for individual liberties. Essentially, Antifederalism championed decentralization and skepticism of centralized authority to safeguard personal and state independence.
