Anti-Sikh violence
Anti-Sikh violence refers to targeted attacks against Sikh individuals and communities, most notably during the late 1980s in India, following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. These violent outbreaks involved massacres, destruction of property, and intimidation, often fueled by political unrest, misunderstandings, and misdirected anger. The violence resulted in thousands of deaths, widespread trauma, and long-lasting communal scars. It highlighted deep divisions and the importance of safeguarding minority rights, emphasizing the need for justice, reconciliation, and community protection.
