Anoxic sediments
Anoxic sediments are layers of ocean or lake bottoms that lack oxygen. In these environments, the oxygen needed for many organisms and chemical processes is absent, often due to slow water movement or high organic material decomposition. Without oxygen, different bacteria and chemical reactions occur, leading to unique chemical conditions. These sediments can preserve organic materials and minerals well because the lack of oxygen slows decay, creating distinct ecosystems and playing a crucial role in global nutrient cycles.
