Anomie Theory
Anomie Theory, developed by sociologist Emile Durkheim and later expanded by Robert Merton, explains how societal norms and values Guide individual behavior. When these norms are unclear, inconsistent, or broken—such as during social upheaval or rapid change—people may feel disconnected or purposeless, a state called "anomie." This can lead to increased deviance or crime as individuals struggle to find legitimate ways to achieve success or fulfillment. Essentially, anomie occurs when the social order fails to provide clear guidance, resulting in social strain and potential negative behaviors.
