Annulus Fibrosus

The annulus fibrosus is the tough, outer layer of intervertebral discs in your spine. It consists of several layers of fibrous cartilage that surround a gel-like center, called the nucleus pulposus. This structure provides strength and flexibility, allowing your spine to move while also absorbing shocks and maintaining stability. The annulus fibrosus helps prevent the central gel from bulging out and protects the spinal column from injury. When it wears down or tears, it can lead to back pain or disc herniation.
