Ancient theatre design
Ancient theatre design focused on creating spaces that enhanced audience experience and acoustics. Theatres were typically built into hillsides, forming semi-circular or circular forms called amphitheatres, with tiered seating allowing good sightlines and sound distribution. A central performance area, called the orchestra, was often surrounded by a backdrop or stage building (skene). These designs prioritized visibility and acoustics, using natural terrain and strategic layouts to ensure all spectators could see and hear performances clearly without modern amplification. This architecture reflected the importance of communal entertainment and storytelling in ancient societies.
