ancient Switzerland
Ancient Switzerland, known as Helvetia in Roman times, was inhabited by Celtic tribes called the Helvetii. It was a rugged landscape of mountains, lakes, and fertile valleys, making it ideal for farming and defense. Around 15 BC, the Romans conquered the region, integrating it into the Roman Empire, which brought roads, towns, and trade. After the fall of Rome, various barbarian tribes and later medieval feudal states shaped its history. Switzerland’s diverse geography and strategic location contributed to its development as a region of independent cantons, eventually forming the modern Swiss Confederation in the 13th century.
