Ancestry of cats

Cats belong to the family Felidae, which includes both domestic and wild species. The domestic cat, Felis catus, is believed to have descended from the African wildcat, Felis lybica, around 9,000 years ago in the Near East. As humans began farming, cats were attracted to rodent populations, forming a mutually beneficial relationship. Over time, selective breeding led to various breeds, but all domestic cats share common ancestors with wild felines. Today, they are cherished pets and play important roles in various cultures worldwide.
