Anatomy of the Thoracic Spine

The thoracic spine is the middle portion of the backbone, composed of 12 vertebrae labeled T1 to T12. These bones are connected to the rib cage, providing support and protection for vital organs like the heart and lungs. Each thoracic vertebra has a body, a arch, and several joints that allow limited movement, mainly twisting and bending. The spine's structure helps maintain posture, absorb shocks, and facilitate respiration. Ligaments, muscles, and the spinal cord run through this area, working together to keep the spine stable and allow coordinated movement.
