Amyloids

Amyloids are abnormal protein fibers that form when certain proteins misfold and stick together in a specific, stable structure. These misfolded proteins can accumulate in tissues and organs, disrupting normal function. Amyloids are associated with various diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, where their buildup damages cells and impairs organ systems. Despite their association with illness, amyloids also have some natural biological roles. Understanding amyloids helps scientists develop treatments for related diseases and learn more about protein behavior in the body.
