Amyloid precursor protein

Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a naturally occurring protein found mainly in the brain. It plays roles in neuron growth, repair, and communication. When properly processed, APP helps maintain healthy brain function. However, in some cases, enzymes break down APP in a way that creates sticky, protein fragments called amyloid beta. These fragments can accumulate and form plaques in the brain, which are associated with Alzheimer's disease. Understanding APP helps researchers explore ways to prevent or treat such neurodegenerative conditions by targeting the formation of these problematic plaques.
