Amyloid light-chain amyloidosis

Amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis is a condition where abnormal proteins called light chains, produced by certain plasma cells in the bone marrow, misfold and accumulate as amyloid deposits in tissues and organs. These deposits disrupt normal function, potentially affecting the heart, kidneys, liver, or nerves. It often occurs in association with plasma cell disorders like multiple myeloma. Symptoms vary depending on affected organs, and diagnosis involves tissue biopsy and specialized tests. Treatment focuses on controlling the abnormal protein production, often with chemotherapy, to reduce amyloid deposition and prevent organ damage.
