AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness)

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a condition that occurs when you ascend quickly to high altitudes, typically above 8,000 feet (2,500 meters). Reduced oxygen levels at these elevations can cause symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath. It happens because your body struggles to adjust to the lower oxygen availability. Mild cases often improve with rest and ascent adjustments, but severe cases can lead to more serious conditions like high-altitude pulmonary or cerebral edema. Proper acclimatization, gradual ascent, and staying hydrated help prevent AMS. If symptoms worsen, descending to lower altitude is essential.
