Amniotic Fluid Embolism
Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE) is a rare but serious complication during or shortly after childbirth. It occurs when amniotic fluid, which surrounds the baby in the womb, enters the mother's bloodstream. This can trigger a sudden severe allergic-like reaction, leading to problems like difficulty breathing, sudden collapse, and abnormal blood clotting. Although rare, AFE can be life-threatening for both mother and baby. Immediate emergency care is essential to manage symptoms and improve outcomes. The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but prompt medical attention can be lifesaving.
